    EU Regulation Changes: Waste Incineration Directive

    Under the EU Directive 2010/76/EC of the European Parliament and council, the European Commission came to a conclusion regarding the Best Available Techniques for waste incineration, and on the 12th November 2019, the waste management process changed.

    The Old WI Directive – Directive 2000/76/EC

    The aim of the old, WI Directive (also known as Directive 2000/76/EC) for waste incineration was to reduce the negative effects that incineration and co-incineration of waste had on the environment. The ‘Best Available Techniques’, also known as BATs, were put into place to minimise the emissions which were causing harm to the soil, air, groundwater, surface water and us, humans. So on 28th December 2000, the directive merged and enforced both hazardous waste and household waste to be combined into one single text.

    Over a decade after, the BATs from 2000 were reassessed and updates were made to further reduce/prevent emissions that stem from waste incineration.

    New EU regulations on the waste incineration directive – 12th November 2019

    With a new main objective to further lessen the environmental impact and improve performance, new processes and preventative measures were put into place. One of the key changes brought to the new directive was the introduction of radiation monitoring systems. These must be used by all businesses to alert controllers when contaminated materials have been found.

    Contamination can be found in:

    • Municipal solid waste
    • Other non-hazardous waste
    • Clinical waste

    In order to move forward with the new directive, Weightron collaborates with site security specialists, Saphymo, to provide SaphyGATE G Radiation Detection Systems to waste management businesses. This new technical product has been created to help businesses detect even the lowest levels of artificial and natural radiation in vehicles, cargo loads and rail cars.

    As recycling becomes more widespread, waste management facilities must change to cater to more complex waste sources, which means all materials must be properly checked before they reach incineration plants. Ensuring early detection can help to avoid expensive clean-ups and prevents there being more landfill waste.
