Clinical Waste Management
Clinical Waste Management
The latest stringent requirements are laid down in the Environment Agency’s publication, Healthcare waste: appropriate measures for permitted facilities, issued in July 2020.
Healthcare waste is waste produced during human or animal healthcare, or related research activities, and includes clinical waste.
Companies receiving clinical waste must ensure that the advice they give to waste producers about segregating and packaging waste follows the Safe Management of Healthcare Waste (HTM 07 01) memorandum issued in 2013. They must also implement a waste tracking system that holds information about all the waste they receive and process, generated by:
- pre-acceptance
- acceptance or rejection
- storage
- treatment
- transfer
The regulations stipulate that companies must weigh each consignment of waste on arrival to confirm the quantities against the accompanying paperwork (unless alternative reliable systems are available, for example based upon volume).
Weightron’s waste management system is based around a low profile stainless steel floor scale, an intelligent touchscreen weight-operator terminal and barcode reader. The system is intuitive and very easy to use for operators. Reports are automatically generated with all the required data for compliance and the system can link directly into on-site management systems.
